• Tutorial : how to make your own hair wraps

Well, as I promised, here's my tutorial to learn how to make hair wraps ! (Yeah, I'm doing it even though only two persons asked for it. Nah.)

    Here we go !

First, let's make an ingredients list. You'll need :

    • Some wool, or cotton threads, depending on how much you want to invest and on what you want it to look like (wool = thicker wrap, cheap ; cotton = thinner, way more expensive)

    • Some scissors (or a knife, or your tooth, whatever sharp object you might find)
    • A small piece of thick paper and a hair grip (facultative)
    • A guinea pig, willing to let you mess around with his/her hair... That is the most difficult ingredient to find, use your charms and persuasive talents ! Mine for this tutorial is called... Barbie.

Look how she seems happy to be here. ^^

Once you've got all the ingredients, you can start !

    • Separate one hair strand from the rest of the hair. It will be the base of the hair wrap : it musn't be too thin or to thick. Think about the fact that some threads will add thickness to your braid.

    • It will be easier to wrap if you separate the hair strand with a circle of thick paper and a haire grip, like that it is shown below. Tie the other hair together. This way, they won't be caught accidentally in the wrapping.

    • Choose the colors you'll use. Note that it is better if your guinea pig agrees with your choice. ^^ Cut them at a good length, I couldn't give you a proper rule for that, I cut when I feel like it's long enough. ^^' Let's say that you should cut it at five times the length of your guinea pig's hair. Then, put all the threads in a small rubber band and fold them in half :

The rubber band serves for the wrap to stay where it is instead of slipping. If you don't have any, just make a very tight knot as close of the skull as you can. If you do have a rubber band, the next step is to wrap it around your hair strand. The threads must be caught in the rubber band and folded in two equally long parts :

Now make a knot around the hair strand ;)

Now you'll have to make a braid. A tight braid, composed by your hair strand and half of the threads (the knot has divided the threads in two : take the ones BELOW the knot). It should be about 4 or 5 centimeters-long.

Block it by making a knot with one of the braided threads :

Now you may start wrapping. Take the part of threads you left at the top of the braid, choose one or two and wrap it/them over the knot, the rubber band, the hair, everything. The point is to hide it because it isn't very pretty. Try to wrap as tightly as you can : the tighter you wrap it, the longer it will last.

If you have some gradient wool, please use it, it looks very nice on hair wraps ! :)

For the different patterns, I have made a few explicative drawings, but they're in french, sorry ^^' Hope you'll understand anyway, please ask me in the comments if you don't ;)

When you're done (all the hair have been covered / appropriate length reached), make a big knot to end the wrap :

You can put a charm, a bead or anything else and make another knot to tie it if you want. Then, cut the threads at 2 cm from the knot.

Finished ! Now, Barbie will be able to brag at the beach and to seduce all the surfers :p

And that's all ;) I learned how to do hair wraps by looking at the others and by massacring a hair head (Barbie again... ^^), but just tell your guinea pig that hair wraps can be removed easily in case of unsatisfying result.

Yeah, by the way, to remove it, cut the threads just above the final knot and unwrap the threads.

So go ahead, don't hesitate, I'm sure your nanny can lend you some wool to start your hair wrapping business. :)
